I installed the newest version of the Microsoft Mobile Device Center and plugged the phone in. All went well and it synched very nicely into Outlook for him. Now here's the question.....does the sync center have to be running in the background all the time or can he just run it prior to doing a sync?

WAD is what is needed to sync with a Windows Mobile Device. Sync Center seems to act as a dashboard for general sync capabilities.
